The book was the Winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award for Non-fiction. "A Problem from Hell": America in the Age of Genocide by Samantha Power, published by Perennial Power, now the executive director of Harvard's Carr Center for Human Rights, was formerly a journalist for U.S. News and World Report. In this Pulitzer prize-winning book, she writes about the Turkish genocide of Armenians in 1915-1916, the Holocaust, Cambodia's Khmer Rouge genocide of millions between 1975 and 1979, Iraqi attacks on Kurdish populations, Rwanda, and Bosnian "ethnic cleansing." The central question of the book is why America, which had vowed "never again" after the Holocaust, has allowed acts of genocide to continue and Power describes Americans who courageously attempted to prevent genocides and who tried to get their country to act. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
