INTRODUCTION
The documentary portrait of Fred Cuny provides an important entry point for a discussion of contradictions, tortuous trade-offs, and dilemmas. Compassion without commitment and accountability was increasingly untenable from Cuny's point of view - a perspective developed by twenty-five years of experience. There is much ambiguity and there are no "right" answers in the following exercises. You can assign the film as homework or view it over several class periods. These activities can be used in conjunction with your selection of clips from the film or alone.
