STARTING THE DISCUSSION
"The Lost American" provides many opportunities to explore with students the issues raised in the film. You can use the following questions to engage students in discussions.
- What has changed and remained the same in humanitarian crises and international responses during and after the Cold War?
- What are the reasons to pursue humanitarianism in the absence of a realistic political strategy? What if humanitarian aid may prolongs a war by playing into the hands of war criminals?
- Do humanitarian efforts allow Western governments to avoid diplomatic and military engagement?
- Do governments have an obligation to intervene in other countries where atrocities are widespread? Have military responses helped or hindered?
- What role does the media play in facilitating international responses to those in need?
- Why does the coverage of wars dwarf reporting on poverty and preventable disease?
- What actions could prevent humanitarian tragedies?
- With humanitarians increasingly as targets, what is the relevance of the traditional principles of neutrality, and impartiality?
