Stomach surgery is still radical and controversial. Here's more information:
Gastric Surgery for Severe Obesity

Here's an authoritative overview of gastric surgery--how it works, the benefits and risks and who the surgery is for. This site is produced by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), part of the National Institutes of Health under the U.S. Public Health Service.
National Institutes of Health (NIH) Consensus Development Conference Statement on Gastrointestinal Surgery for Severe Obesity

In March 1991, NIH brought together surgeons, gastroenterologists, psychiatrists, nutritionists and other health care workers to discuss this type of surgery. This site is their final panel statement on the surgery, as well as other options available for the morbidly obese. This report lists benefits and risks, patient selection and overall recommendations.
American Society for Bariatric Surgery

This professional organization for surgeons offers another general overview of gastric surgery, covering the rationale for the procedure, treatment goals, patient selection, risks, results, etc.
