"Down the Stretch: Settling on Gore Almost Certainly"
October 31, 2000

I have been sorry to see the election get into "name calling". I thought they both knew that doesn't get many votes-in fact, it can lose votes and credibility. I do not think that Bush's "distrust of Government & Gore" sways many people.

My Current Events Class [at a local senior center] this afternoon spent a bit of time on the election, most will not say "out loud" who they will vote for but I sense a leaning toward Gore even though there is a sound Republican voice there also. I talked with an older woman yesterday whose son is a physician. She received one of the 62 million telephone calls from the Bush camp--this one was a recording of Barbara Bush telling her that her son, George W., was going to take care of Social Security for her. This lady is writing to Mrs. Bush and telling her something like:

"your son does not need to take care of Social Security for me. What I would like is for him to change his stance on gays & lesbians and try to help the 'gay bashing' that goes on in our country. I am concerned for my son even though he is an adult and a doctor and is gay. Your son's dancing around the abortion issue and his appointments to the Supreme Court gives me NO comfort, either."

I have friends who are for Bush and others, like myself, who are leaning for all-out for Gore. Bush has a persona that is very friendly and casual but I have grown tired of his acting. Gore is a bit wooden, and even with the over use of "I'll fight for you", the feeling that he is sincere and will pay attention to the needs of everyone comes through to me. Unless something happens in the next few days to change my mind, I feel certain that my vote will be for Gore. My Issues are still: WOMEN'S RIGHTS coupled with Supreme Court appointments; Gore's experience in international issues; the acceptance of all people including, of course, the gay & lesbian community.
