"After the First Debate: Tipping Ever so Slightly Toward Gore"
October 5, 2000

As I watched and listened to the debate, I had these thoughts and feelings: At the introductions, Bush seemed uptight and Gore more relaxed.

I'm not sure that this debate changed very many individual minds....Gore used too many numbers and percentages, and his attempt at being folksy didn't impress me. It seems to me that Bush's proposals are questionable if our current prosperity does not continue. Gore's, I felt, could weather a downward turn.

At one point, it seemed Bush was saying that a change of a political party at the helm would be good for the country-I wondered if he was including Nader and Buchanan in this estimate? Also, Bush danced around the women's rights issue and his answer to appointments to the Supreme Court. I feel he is tied too tightly to the Republican stance.

On the energy issue, I felt that Gore's proposal of funding and encouraging gas and oil exploration in the US, as well as off-shore drilling, is a valid one. We need to cut out depending on foreign oil and gas. After sleeping on all I had heard, my feeling is that neither Bush nor Gore can accomplish what they propose without support from the House and Senate. Each, I hope, are giving support to candidates of their party running for House & Senate seats. On a scale of 1 to 5, I'm leaning toward Gore at about 1.
