Flashback Hunting Bin Laden

December 27, 2009

VIEW: A flashback to New Year's 1999, the eve of a new decade and new millennium.

U.S. intelligence had no idea of Bin Laden's whereabouts, but knew he was determined to strike. Some were certain Al Qaeda cells were buried in America. [See Justice Department's Fran Townsend's interview on the extraordinary fears surrounding the Times Square New Year's Eve countdown.]

Bin Laden already had been linked to the first World Trade Center attack in 1993, the bombings of U.S. embassies in Africa in 1998 and many other events tied to Al Qaeda, one of the most active terrorist groups in the world.

So here are the concluding minutes from our sixty-minute report on Bin Laden, who for two decades now has taunted, threatened and frustrated the United States. This report was first broadcast in April 1999, but was updated and re-aired two nights after the Sept. 11, 2001 destruction of the World Trade Center and attack on the Pentagon. [These concluding minutes reflect the updating.]

Well, 10 years later and no Bin Laden. We got Sadam (who had nothing to do with 9/11) but no Osama. At least that's what we're led to beleive.
I suppose that, with all the money going towards catching terrorists, it might me more profitable NOT to catch Bin Laden... ever.

the U.S has gotten alittle smarter since 911.Enough TOO KNOW THAT Bin Laden IS BUT A SMALL PART OF THE BIG PICTURE .IT IS THE WHOLE ARAB NATION THAT THE ANGLO AND THE CHRISTIAN BASE RELIGIONS HAVE TOO DEAL WITH.

I'd like to appropriately counter the notion that there is any sort of simplistic "whole Arab nation" vs. western Christian religions. It's that sort of ignorant, uninformed ideological stance that needs to be haulted, and enlightened, because people that hold to such a dogmatic idealistic view of the world are everything that's wrong with it, and here's why.
That view, and any seemingly similar view of any other, takes a large socioeconomic picture that includes international factions and local national postering by various governing structures, each of which is motivated in turn by their own financial and moral objectives, and smears the whole multiplicity of stake holders with an inaccurate color of fundamentalist religion as their driving motivation. This is just speculation, but I bet the likelihood of people of extremely religious Christian faith being more likely to be the ones to take such an uninformed view. Not that every Christian would have such a viewpoint, I'm sure most have a better idea of the big picture for sure, but it's extremely religious Christians that spout that tainted perception of the world.
And now we reach the crux of this whole thing. What is the difference in an extreme fundamentalist Muslim and an extremely devout Christian? Objectively speaking, they both believe in a strict adherence to their faith, both feel that they and their indoctrination are the one true word of God, both feel that their faith gives them the power to thwart evil in the world, evil being anything that doesn't adhere to their specific faith... yes, there is obviously an Islamic fanaticism causing terror throughout the whole world right now. But if religious fundamentalism could've been more globally affecting in the past, it would have. It hasn't changed, it's always been there. "The Crusades" ring a bell? How many wars in history occured, how many people have died, because of a direct result of a motivation derived from a religious contradiction about what is right and wrong by God? We now as a society have the scientific capability to see the reality that facts as defined by the Genesis of almost all the major religions are a bit inaccurate. 500 years ago saying the Earth wasn't the center of the universe would get you put to death on the constitute of heresy. Galileo was incarcerated the end of his life for his observances in celestial happenings and labeled a heretic. Science has simply through objective observance extended the historical existence of Earth to billions of years from the dogmatic precep of 4000 years, give or take the ages of those people labeled in the Bible to date back to the beginning of Creation. What are all these dinosaur bones and early hominid bones that seem to fall into an extremely predictable layering of earth through annual cycles that are observable from now til the beginning of earth's actual time of creation?? The devil put it all there to fool us, right? Oh no, we simply shouldn't question God's devices and ways of things, we should just believe in the good book 'X'(you fill in the X with your specific faith's book, Quaran, Bible, whatever), and anyone who disbelieves will have to face the judgement of God... or perhaps you'll act as a vessel of God and do his bidding by trying to blow up planes, or killing abortion doctors, or simply teaching your children that science as observed through objective analysis is actually wrong because the Bible says so. There's nothing wrong with faith in a higher power. I believe it guides us, enlightens us, heals us and lifts us up. But a strict adherence to principles outlined in texts by the best definitive, logical, ethical consideration that groups of uneducated men by today's standards thousands of years ago could come up with is absolutely insane. God didn't empower us as Man to have a definitive answer in front of us. We've only the wisdom and consideration of others to help guide our own beliefs and moral considerations, and thus we should define divinity only for ourselves, and not ever attempt to impose our own personal relationship with a higher power, God, whatever or whomever you choose to call it. If mankind as a whole adhered to that one single principle, the whoooole world would be a better place. Live and Learn

Killing Osama Bin Laden, capturing him or whatever will do nothing to reduce the Jihad that many Islamic organisations globally are fighting.
Hamas, Hizbollah are just two examples ( there are many) and the Wahabbi sect (and others) of Islam that have very strict interpretations of the Koran and how sharia law shall be effected.
Short term, Kill or capture Bin Laden would see an upward spike in Jihad. I do wish we would stop calling it a "War on terror".

Hodgson.

Even if we found Bin Laden and killed him, would it mean the end of terrorism? Absolutely not, it just gets worse.

As ignorant as I seem too apprear I do have common smarts ( without book knowledge) not even smart enough too go to Harvard. But, when I talk to some of the people whom have come to this country, they are in the majority ,Pakistan, Iraq,India, Iran , Jordan,Affganistan when it comes to the chief cause of 911 . They say that the U.S. seems to want total control of there country , that nobody has any brain stamina but the U.S. and father knows best. Some know it was in the name of God that land west of the Mississippi was taken because the country needed it , from Mexico, the Native American.People were kidnapped from the continent of Africa and made to be Slaves, in the name of God. And said of God the U.S. needs the natural resorces from the Arab countries(oil)ect. IT seems that western Ideals are brought too the forefront with the whooooooole world, and I don't know that GOD. But I do know that if a stranger comes to my house and tries to take control. I am going to fight to the death.Get out of the book once and a while and talk to some of the people that the goverment say that you are not suppose to like, you will see plain an simple. to those whom are called terroist, insurgents are from Eygpt, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Yeman,Majority are Muslim and this is Jihahd . The KORAN states in the beggining that Islam is the confirmation of Christianity, Judaism, and Islam . I am not a jihahdist nor am I a muslim, or a jew. nor am i a christian, but I do Believe in God Almighty, and not a fanatic about it. But Iknow what I see, and hear, and if you want this crisis to end do like I say GO and shake one of the Terrorist hand And get to know him , and respect him For Peace Sake. And leave the attitude of superiority where you found it. And leave History to its self , and make History. I can relate to the enemy even though I don't condone it's tactic , Iam African American, 60plus and know.

This is just one big performance for all the world to watch and "think" they know what's going on. I mean do we really believe what we see and read about the news that's presented to us is going to truly tell all?

Create an enemy..if you don't have one already!

We can rant and rave all we want about Bin Laden, polictics, economics etc, but until we understand who the players are and how they are all related, we will never know how and why things happen.

Lastly, why do we think the way we do?
Einstein once said, "what does the fish know about the water in which it lives"?

I say,

"What does the human mind know about the world in which it lives"?

Darryl / January 2, 2010 2:27 PM

What is all this talk about religion? I am anti-terror. In my humble opinion, terror equates to evil. It really is that simple. Bin Laden is 'evil' and we owe it to every family member of a 9/11 victim to hunt down and kill the enemy.
"Stop calling it the 'War on Terror'? What 'should' we call it then? Amazing. Those of you who think killing Bin Laden would actually make things worse are either ignorant or just plain hopeless pacifists.
Anyone with genuine common sense knows that killing Bin Laden would absolutely be a blow to the enemy. Of course "the War on Terror" would continue; however, the death of Bin Laden will boost the morale of all those brave souls who are defending our Freedom to this very day. It will give closure to many New Yorkers who are patiently awaiting 'final justice'. We will take away al-Qaeda’s ‘poster-boy’; leaving them without a famous leader or image.
Killing Bin Laden will help our cause. I’m looking forward to his demise.
Respectfully,
‘An American Patriot’

Rooting out terror networks (minds) can be only done by banning islam. On faithfreedom site we have put forth a solid evidence for it.

Khan / January 4, 2010 12:34 AM

It would be a blow but only in western minds, this would ignite and unite muslims agaist us. This is what they live for and he would become a martyr. Osama is nothing compared to the cells of terroists around the world. Having said that I still wished he would be killed.

Jim / January 4, 2010 5:07 AM

If we find and kill or bring to justice Bin Laden, it will say to the rest that we will not stop; we will find you. That will help. There may be a temporary backlash, Jim, but in the long run it will help. Further, the reason we are in Afghanistan is because the Taliban would not turn Bin laden over to us. If they had, we wouldn't be there. If we can find Bin Laden, then it will help us get out of Afghanistan; not totally, but it will help.

On the religious aspect, well religion is behind most of the insanity, killing, and destruction that has gone on, is going on, and will continue to go on in the world. A favorite quote of mine is by Arafat, of all people. "My imaginary God is better than your imaginary God."

Josh, the "American Patriot", Good and Evil are relative, not absolute. The acts of destruction by religious fundamentalists are acts of good in the eyes of the fundamentalists, and bad in the eyes of others; relative to the viewpoint. For example, there are many "American Patriots" fighting to deny equality to gay people who want to marry. One can dive into the "good book" (pick one) and say that homosexuality is bad, but the very nature of the founding of our country and the changes this country has gone through to work toward that equality says differently. We abolished slavery, we gave the right to vote to Women, we ended "separate but equal" (segregation), we have moved forward with civil rights, and now we face the pious religious bigots who can't seem to figure out that this nation was NOT founded as a Christian nation, and who must stop this "evil" of equality.

I want to say, "Hey - Tea Bag This!" but I am not sure how to work it in.

And now for the Bush dig. Thanks for taking our attention of Afghanistan and Bin laden so you could go to war with Irag and fill the coffers of Haliburton, KBR, Bechtel, et al, with massive public wealth. Just like the Congress is about to fill the coffers of the private insurance companies with massive public wealth disguised as subsidies.

I am sure bin Laden is laughing, where ever he is, at how we have wasted the wealth of this great nation. Oh, but he didn't really do it. He helped it along, but this has been going on for 30 years. Suggested reading - The Shock Doctrine: The Rise of Disaster Capitalism by Naomi Klein.

Do you know what the difference is between Christian religious fundamentalists and Islamic religious fundamentalist? Body count.

If you go all the way back in history including the Crusades, the rise of Islam, the Inquisition, current Jihadists, bombing abortion clinics and kill doctors and nurses, etc, I am not sure who is ahead.

To paraphrase: "It is uninspected belief, stupid."
