The Institute is involved in the handling and analyzing of MOX fuel and conducts research into spent fuel reprocessing and waste-treatment technology. In early 1994, Russia's nuclear regulatory agency, Gosatomnadzor ordered certain activities at this facility to shut down for six months because of lax arrangements for protecting plutonium at the site.
