Answer: 40 shillings if caught in the neighborhood; ten pounds if the slave
was caught in another colony.
In September 1769, a mulatto carpenter and shoemaker named Sandy stole a horse
and ran away from Jefferson's estate. Jefferson in the Virginia Gazette
of Sept 7, 1769, offered a reward for his capture -- forty shilling if he were
taken in Albemarle County, and ten pounds if caught in another colony. Sandy
was caught and three years later, Jefferson sold him for 100 pounds. [Fawn Brodie,
Thomas Jefferson: An Intimate History, pg 104]
