Derek Tice

Tice won habeas corpus relief in U.S. District Court in September 2009, on the claim that trial counsel was ineffective in not moving to suppress Tice’s confession. The attorney general of Virginia appealed to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. Oral arguments were held in September 2010.

Danial Williams

Williams filed a federal habeas corpus petition in U.S. District Court in January 2010; he alleges that he is innocent and that his parole violates due process. The commonwealth is seeking to have the entire petition dismissed on the grounds that it was not filed within the one-year statute of limitations for habeas, and that innocence is not valid grounds for granting a writ of habeas corpus.

Williams has also filed a state habeas petition in Norfolk Circuit Court, based on new evidence which has emerged about the corruption of retired Detective Robert Glenn Ford. (See below.)

Robert Glenn Ford

Earlier this summer, retired detective Robert Glenn Ford was indicted for extorting money from defendants in exchange for getting them favorable treatment. Tried in U.S. District Court in Norfolk, he took the stand in his own defense. On Oct. 27, 2010 Ford was found guilty on two of four extortion charges and one charge of lying to the FBI. He was sentenced to 12 years and six months in prison on Feb. 25, 2011.
