Here's a look at the showdown in October 1993 between President Boris Yeltsin and his political opponents in the Russian Parliament who opposed his radical reform efforts.

The confrontation had been brewing for almost a year. Finally, Yeltsin dissolved the Parliament and brought in tanks to shoot up the Parliament Building, a symbol of Russia's new-born democracy. The official count was 146 killed. No Western leader spoke out against Yeltsin's actions.

Critics of Yeltsin and U.S. policy say this event was an example of how the U.S., when faced with choosing between democratic reform and Yeltsin, sided with Yeltsin every time--often at the expense of building democracy in Russia.
