JIMMY ON BALACHINE

JG: Did you ever see Snake Hips Tucker?

JC: Loved him.

JG: Did he tap dance?

JC: Yes, in his way.

JG: Did you have to like practice a lot to do it?

JC: Snake Hips?

JG: No, taps.

JC: Yes, dear. No, not really. No, I was a good faker in the beginning, and then it got interesting to me. I was a good faker in the beginning. All I know is you put that foot over there, you put this foot over here. And you do that, and you make that thing, like (illustration). And then all of a sudden it became interesting to me, and I wanted to do better than the other, than my partner. And I did.

JG: So, you practiced then.

JC: So, I practiced. Then I learned about dance as it really was.

JG: What did you learn -

JC: George Balanchine had a party.

JG: What?

JC: George Balanchine had a party. Loved my legs for some reason. Because I had a step I used to do then way back. I was doing tap -I was making moves that they loved to see. And they didn't know how I got them. Cause I never knew about ballet till I met Balanchine.
