REPROCESSING: HOW IT WORKS

Spent fuel rods from a nuclear reactor are taken away and shredded. By means of a chemical process, plutonium and other long-lived fission products (the actinides) are removed. All of these products are capable of undergoing fission, so they are fed back into a reactor and used as fuel.
