Letting kids know that everyone in the ether isn't trustworthy or cares about them is easy when they are sure their parent(s) do care about them. I put no controls on what my son viewed or websites he visited, but I was always around. What other kids tried to sneak, he was open about. We have to communicate with our kids. We don't have to be their friends but we need to connect on an intensely personal level.

I knew the technology but he has way surpassed me in cutting edge knowledge and as a user. That's a good thing. There are lessons that transcend and are relevant; if you are starting from ground zero, you have your work cut out for you. Learn. Enlighten yourself. Don't be fearful. Learn together. Let your child teach you. It will do wonders for your relationship and your knowledge base.
